Non Diabetic Blood Sugar Level

The amount of glucose (sugar) in our blood is called blood sugar level. The unit to measure the blood sugar level is millimoles per litre (mmol/l). Non diabetic blood sugar level refers to the blood sugar level for a healthy person that always stays within a normal limit, although it might higher after each meal and lower in the morning. For a diabetes persons, their blood sugar level will stays outside the limit of the non diabetic blood sugar level unless it is treated.

What should the non diabetic blood sugar level be?

So how high is the non diabetic blood sugar level should be?

Generally, the ideal values for non diabetic blood sugar level at different measurement conditions are:

For adults:

    Before meals: 4 to 7mmol/l (70 to 126 mg/dL in the US)
    90 minutes after meals (Post-Prandial): <10mmol/l (>140 mg/dL)
    Before bedtime: 7 and 10 mmol/l

For kids:

The non diabetic blood sugar level of a kid would normally range between 60 to 100 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). If a kid has a fasting blood sugar level of 126 mg/dL or higher, this kid may has probably developed diabetes and must go for further treatment.

Glycosylated Hemoglobin A1C level

To diagnose whether a person has diabetes or not, looking at non diabetic blood sugar level alone is not sufficient. Physician will normally take the fasting glucose reading repeatedly, and validate with an A1C (Glycated Hemoglobin A1C) reading.

A1C is the average glucose level over the past 3 months. The non-diabetic reading should be less than 6%. This is actually the mean value of a glucose level of about 7.0 mmol/L (126 mg/dL) within a period of 90 days. According to study, there is higher risk of developing diabetes complications that will damage the eyes, kidneys and nerves if the A1C is more than 8%, . Prompt and decisive intervention including diet and exercise is essential to prevent it from getting worse.

What is the IDEAL values to maintain?

As you know, prolong high blood sugar level will bring serious complication to the body, as it may leads to the damage of the small blood vessels. Thus controlling blood sugar level at a reasonable limit is essential. But what is the absolutely right value to maintain?

According to a guidelines from Dr.Richard Bernstein's Diabetes Solution, the following are the blood sugar levels that a person should always aim for, no matter this person is diabetes or not:

Ideal non fasting non diabetic blood sugar level: 83 mg/dl
Ideal fasting blood sugar level: 70-100 mg/dl
    Ideal A1C level: 4.0 to 5.9

Why You Should Maintain A Healthy Blood Sugar Level

By keeping the blood sugar level stable, you can reduce your risk of diabetic complications significantly. If there is excessive glucose in the blood, the kidneys will need to pull water from other organs like eyes in order to produce enough urine to excrete all the extra sugar. This would not only causes body dehydration, but will cause damage to eye and strain to kidney. If this is ignored further, more serious late stage diabetes complication could develop including kidney disease (nephropathy), nerve disease (neuropathy), eye disease (retinopathy) as well as cardiovascular disease such as heart attack, hypertension and stroke.

How To Maintain An Ideal Non Diabetic Blood Sugar Level

In fact beside the necessity to control blood sugar level, people with diabetes mellitus (especially Type2) has to rigorously controlling their blood pressure and cholesterol too.

To maintain an ideal non diabetic blood sugar level, you must have a healthy diet which includes vegetables and fruits, such as sweet potato, barley, onions, garlic, lemon and cinnamon (these fruits are are rich in antioxidant and could lower your cholesterol level as well). Needless to say, regular exercise is also essential in order to keep the glucose levels within a safe limit.
